Cleaning

goo-goneMy wife parked under some trees that were leaking copious amounts of sap. At the end of a single work day, there were probably fifty or sixty drips on her car. In addition to getting on the body, there was sap on her windshield, moon roof, driver side glass, rear windshield, passenger side glass, quarter glass, you name it. What a mess!

Worse, she didn’t get after it until it had been there for a couple of weeks. Not a good choice, it turns out. She purchased Goo Gone Gel, and yesterday we set to attempting to rid the sap from all the car’s glass.

We followed the manufacturer’s instructions, which essentially said to spray it on, let it sit for a while, then whipe it off.

We followed the manufacturer’s instructions five times.

We still have sap on the windows. After the five scrubs with the Goo Gone Gel, we drove through a car wash to remove the film of Goo Gone. After that, I washed the car by hand to remove the film of Goo Gone. Next, I washed the car’s windows with auto glass cleaner to remove the film of Goo Gone. After three treatments with window cleaner, most of the film is gone. So is most of the sap.

All in all, it was a pretty unsatisfactory experience. I used half a bottle of product, and we still have sap on the car. I will be trying another product the next time I’m faced with the situation – which will hopefully be a long time from now!

Is there a best method to cleaning your dirty windshield?  What materials should you use on auto glass?  How often should it be cleaned?

Windshields should be cleaned as regularly as you wash your car.  Or as soon as you notice spots or smudges, make sure to clean your glass immediately because dirty glass can be a hazard while driving.  Whether its fingerprints or glare on the outside or inside of the windshield can cause a flash or quick blind spot in your area of view. The last thing you want is an accident due to impaired vision; the least of your worries then would be extensive auto glass repair.

There are many materials in which people use to wash automobile glass.  In fact, many professional detailers actually use plain old newspaper, believe or not.  However, if you are deterred by that method, you can use a microfiber cloth, which is an extra soft material that is non-abrasive yet absorbs dirt and grime.  Others simply use paper towels.  Either way, the best method is: to first wipe with the damp material then buff dry.  Wipe until your windshield is completely clear and streak-free.  Your cleaners of choice can range from plain water or baking soda to distilled white vinegar, especially for tough spots.  Also, don’t forget to wipe down your windshield wipers, since they contribute to residue build-up.  Worse, a bit of grime on your wipers can result in a scratched windshield! Many glass repair professionals recommend that the wipers be replaced once a year.

While washing the glass, if you notice any breaks or cracks, you’ll need to look into windshield repair or windshield replacement.  Here at Teleglass, we are happy to help you with all of your auto glass needs. And please let us know the best way that you clean your windshields.
